Topology of additive pairwise effects in food webs

چکیده

Contrasting reductionistic versus holistic views, it is a general question whether adding the parts equals sum. In time of multiple drivers anthropogenic change, crucial issue, and better understanding additivity critical for strategy management. More particular research questions ask what are community effects extinction single species local on different will generate additive responses. Here we perform food web simulations study response to perturbing each species, one by one, possible pairwise combination species. By comparing two, quantify analyze how does depend topological positions perturbed pairs. Results increase predictability research, supporting systems-based conservation management and, possibly, multi-species maximum sustainable yield assessment in fisheries.

Effects of stocking-up freshwater food webs.

The establishment of exotic game fishes to enhance recreational fisheries through authorized and unauthorized stocking into freshwater systems is a global phenomenon. Stocked fishes are often top predators that either replace native top predators or increase the species richness of top predators. Many direct effects of stocking have been documented, but the ecosystem consequences are seldom qua...

Spatial effects for meta-food-webs

In ecology it is widely recognised that many landscapes comprise a network of discrete patches of habitat. The species that inhabit the patches interact with each other through a foodweb, the network of feeding interactions. The meta-foodweb model proposed by Pillai et al. combines the feeding relationships at each patch with the dispersal of species between patches, such that the whole system ...

Food webs

Ecosystems, whether they are forests, lakes or coral reefs, consist of a diverse range of species that interact with each other in many ways. As ecologists we want to understand how these complex systems function as a whole and how they respond to human impacts such as harvesting and environmental change. A mechanistic understanding of the underlying biological processes will allow us to predic...

Predominant Non-additive Effects of Multiple Stressors on Autotroph C:N:P Ratios Propagate in Freshwater and Marine Food Webs

A continuing challenge for scientists is to understand how multiple interactive stressor factors affect biological interactions, and subsequently, ecosystems-in ways not easily predicted by single factor studies. In this review, we have compiled and analyzed available research on how multiple stressor pairs composed of temperature (T), light (L), ultraviolet radiation (UVR), nutrients (Nut), ca...

Weighting and indirect effects identify keystone species in food webs

Species extinctions are accelerating globally, yet the mechanisms that maintain local biodiversity remain poorly understood. The extinction of species that feed on or are fed on by many others (i.e. 'hubs') has traditionally been thought to cause the greatest threat of further biodiversity loss. Very little attention has been paid to the strength of those feeding links (i.e. link weight) and th...
